No lighter fluid is necessary.

Invest in a charcoal chimney. They are cheap and worth every penny. These devices are basically a tube with a heat resistant handle and have a small grate that leaves a space at the bottom where you put some newspaper. Simply fill the chimney with charcoal, put a couple of wadded up newspaper pages in the bottom, set in your grill, and light the newspaper. about 15 minutes later your coals will be red hot and ready to dump out and cook with.

put the grill charcoal down where you want it. then spray the lighter fluid on the charcoal. throw the lighted match on top or in the charcoal pile and it should light. but make sure you are outside - in the open - before you do that and STEP BACK. the first flame can be big!

pile the charcoals in to a rough pyramid shape

place lighter blocks in the bottom of the stack

get an old tin can, cut of both ends and place on top of the pile

light the blocks and the tin will draw air up like a chimmney and get all the coals going.
i use this method all the time

actualy, I think the best way is to get one of those charcoal lighting tubes, you fill it with your charcoal, put a little news paper in the bottom, and light it, when they get going good, you just pour them into the barbque, and there you go, no taste of the fluid, which is nasty, and they get it going even faster than the fluid. if you need more coals later, just put a few more on as you go.
