It's opposite to a full moon. In a new moon, the half of the moon which is illuminated by the sun is pointed away from us, so we can't see it.
The calendar entries are just there to let you know that you shouldn't expect any moonlight on that particular day. It does make for a good night to go stargazing or do other activities that require darker nights.

A "new moon" is when the moon has reached the beginning of its new rotation cycle. The moon completes one orbit around the earth about once a month. So a new moon on your calendar means that the moon is beginning a new orbit around the Earth. Plus, at this time, the moon is not seen from Earth until its rotation brings it back into view. People used to judge time using the cycles of the moon dating way back to early human civilization. Today, some people use this to coordinate activities based on the moon's orbit and astronomer's use this as well.

That is when it is fully a new moon. Moon phases usually go in 3 days, so if a full moon is on your calenedar for the 4th, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th would be the days you would see it as full. Hope this helps.

It means based on the rotation of the moon around the earth, that its there during the day, and you can't see it. See, the moon is shiny because it reflects the sun and we can see it at night. It actually rotates around the earth every 28 days. So depending on where its at in its rotation determines what time of day its in the horizon. If its in the horizon during when we get sunlight, we can't see the moon, its beginning its rotation, hence the name "new moon".

It's a phase of the moon-opposite of full moon. It doesn't reflect any of the sun's light back towards Earth.
