Unfortunately, the published stats for this aren't competely up to date, only going as far as 2002. But by the end of '02, some 945 other runners have broken the 4:00 barrier, including some 260+ American runners. The average number of "new" runners being added to the list is about 28 per year (since 1990), so this means that the number should be about 1,057 give or take, by the end of 2006.

Most world class runners have, but only a few college students have, if I'm correct the number is 2 or 3 and the first was Alan Webb only a few years ago.

Currently, the mile record is held by Hicham El Guerrouj, who set a time of 3 minutes 43.13 seconds in Rome in 1999.

Not a significant amount of people...it is still the time that is used to judge if someone is world class...the record is 3:43.13 and hasn't been broken since 99.

quite a few. its pretty standard for world class level runners to finish in under 4 minutes.
