whenever I put it in drive, it goes ker-clunk, and when i put it back in park, the idle goes up ridicously. I checked the carburator and it sounded really loud in there, like wisshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
What could this be?

I forgot to mention that my El Camino does not have a carburator. It has throttle body EFI. There are two little electrical wires going into what looks like a carburator, under the air filter. There are no idle screws. I guess the computer controls it.

This could be a few things...the idle is set too high, you could have a disconnected or leaking vacuum hose, or you might have something causing your throttle linkage to stick or bind. Have your local mechanic take a quick look at it...it should be an easy fix, and a cheap one too. You might even be able to go to a walmart or sears auto center, or even an auto parts store and they might be able to adjust it for you. Don't try it yourself unless you know what you are doing. And don't continue to drive it this way, as you can damage your trasnmission and/or U-joints by ramming it into gear.

the wisshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... could be a vaccume leak..the high idle could be that your "closing" spring on the carb may not be closing the throttle all the way back to normal. also, your electronic choke may have gone bad or is not receiving the voltage it needs. also, maybe sombody turned up your idle set screw. your timing may have advanced due to a loose distributor lock-down bolt. many things.

The clunk going into reverse may be the transmission.

The high idle could also be caused by that, or you may need have it tuned up. Or, if it's fuel injected, the injectors may be stuck open and need cleaned...or replaced.

Vacuum leak. Check for loose hoses or a leaky gasket. A legth of heater hose with one end placed to your earand the other placed at various points sround the motor will help you pinpoint the source of the hiss.
