As for me, a man, I don't like eating in the restaurants that hire new waitresses and waiters every few days, like Chilis or Applebees. I like good, prompt, consistent service and homestyle cooking with a variety. And if I want breakfast for dinner, I don't want it to taste like fish and chips! I prefer tried and true family restaurants.

Female speaking... Do you leave all the decision making up to her? You say you don't care, but do you complain and pout when she goes to a place she likes? Even if you don't care, make a few suggestions ... she just wants you to be part of the decision making and include you. You could help her by just giving her one place in the area you are driving that you particularly like. She wants you to be happy, too. Relax. If you won't help and she's driving, give her some slack.

I'm all female... usually we take turns deciding but the other can veto if it's someplace they really don't feel hungry for. Personally tho, I prefer him to choose because I am not picky and am happy just about anywhere we go- espicially if it's the Outback :)

As a man - I want variety. If I am going out to eat, I want something I would never have at home.
My wife - she wants comfort and predicable
I don't know though if gender plays a role in the above...

As a woman, I would try to think of a place where the ambience and music are as good or better than the food.

Woman here... I honestly decide somewhere we are both going to enjoy... It's not a huge decision because I'm not picky
