It's because it is a great marketing opportunity to have more hits in yahoo site. You know my visiting to yahoo has increased by more than 1000%, think about others, so they will have great revenue through ads (of course they can demand). They in turn promote other websites ( Source link) wikipedia is getting more & more hits.

They can promote brands though the Y! Q & A , they can earn big money through this, take for example someone is asking a question, " how can i reach capetown, accomodation?"
And i answer him, go to the "S" travel agency & book tickets In "T" airlines, & the "u" resort is too good, the "V" restaurent gives your home food, & the "W" have the good travel guides & "X" is superb SPA inthere, & the "Y" has the great boat charters, & the "Z" club is the cool night club. Phew just listed few but see the brands promoted, Big Money dear.

It's not fair to say that they did this for their own welfare. The success is because people have even stoped spending quality time with their family. People are becoming more populated with problems & confusion in their mind. They want to share their feeling(Q&A), they want recognisation ( Thats the best answer voting system), they want to share their knowledge, so now this is a silent revolution that is happening more like open source more like communism.

It's like this. I can ask a question and some person in New York, in the country, on a hill, sitting under an oak on a park bench, logged on to his wireless laptop, watching squirrels scampering around for morsels in the grass, clicks on the big green answer box and my question pops up on his screen, and he has a fabulous comment to make which I read later and the answer helps me advance a bit in my life. So, it's pure coincidence we had a chance encounter, and it's a happy thing people can carry on, and know a crowd of people are standing near to give a bit of advice with a few clicks and a keyboard.

Other than what all the previous replies have been I think it is to compete with google and AOL on another platform. Maybe they were losing to many people to blogging? Maybe the chat rooms they had to much spam and dirty language. Or all the above. I recently heard on CNN that google had more subscribers than yahoo. You have to have an account to post questions and answer them so I am sure its another way to track people in the end. So watch what you say.

I'm sure it was just someones great idea over there in the Yahoo boardroom, but in any case, I think it's great since I can ask anything about anything, and I know it'll give me answers. Some have really been helpful, especially when I don't know who to ask!

Probably people steal the information off the Internet or steal the microwaves and develop psychological profiles; your likes and dislikes, what questions you ask and answer. Then people with power can manipulate you, either to hurt you or not.

If you build it they will come. Myspace just took the number one site visited slot. The advertisers pay to have their products seen and it is a good forum for communication.
