Fish in fact have extraordinary peripheral vision. This is not due just to having eyes on the sides of their heads as most herbivore mammals do but also because their eyes have an extremely wide field of view. A fish's eye can see almost 180 degrees; this is about double what our eyes can see. This is similar to looking through the peephole of a door. Apparently, if you are a fish it is more important to make sure that nothing sneaks up on you than to have better forward vision such as we need to work with our hands.

Yes. Like all living creatures you can tell whether they are prey or predator. Prey animals have eyes positioned on the sides of their heads to better see a predatory animal stalking or chasing them from a varying degree of vision. Predators have eyes positioned directly in front of the face so they can concentrate on one specific thing.

The reason for their eyes being placed on the sides of their heads is precisely for that. The placement gives almost three hundred degrees of vision.

Actually no - most fish have very poor vision as it is. They rely more on the vibrations they pick up and "translate" with their lateral line to "see", as well as their sense of smell, more than they rely on their eyes.
