There are many reasons why a person's biggest fear may be speaking in public. When I was young, it was mine as well. The fears are related to several factors: one's person, one's knowledge, one's perceptions, and one's preparation. Regarding your person, there is the fear of being in the spotlight, having all eyes/ears on you. There may be insecurity regarding your appearance or the way you speak, or even the sound of your own voice. There may be a physical limitation such as stuttering or lisping which may be embarrassing. If you think of yourself as unattractive, you may believe others see you that way too.Second, your knowledge or lack of it may be a factor. It is more difficult to speak in front of other people regarding something about which you are poorly informed. If you have sufficient preparation time, this can be overcome, but if you are asked to speak spontaneously, this can be a problem. Then you have to "wing it", and that can be very intimidating. Doing lots of research and familiarizing yourself with the topic of the speech will overcome much of this fear. Third, your perceptions can cause fear. If you think that others are listening with a critical ear, ready to tear apart your presentation, you will be afraid. Do YOU listen that way? Or do you try to understand what another person is presenting when he/she speaks? If you show courtesy and interest in what others say, isn't it reasonable to expect that others will do the same for you? Of course, you must be careful not to sabotage yourself by saying negative things about yourself or your message. Be confident. Be accurate, Be authoritative. If you denigrate your presentation, you may change the perception of others from positive to negative. Finally, lack of preparation gives reason for fear and being well prepared brings confidence. Besides the previously mentioned research, you need to practice, practice, practice. Watch yourself in the mirror. Do your speech in front of a trusted friend or family member, and try to correct any weaknesses they point out. Record your own voice on a cassette, and see if you like what you hear. If not, do something to iimprove.

My biggest fear is being torn apart by hungry crocodiles, or being tortured while rotting in a N. Korean concentration camp, all though I admit there is little possiblity of either of those things ever happening to me.

I get butterflys before speaking in public, but I have never been terrified. I know some people dread it like death itself, but I dont believe most of us do (even though some dumb shrink said so).

Do you really think public speaking is a persons biggest fear, honestly? I don't.

jerry seinfeld said 'i read that people's biggest fear is speaking in public. second on the list is dying! DYING! this means that, at a funeral, they'd rather be the one in the casket than the one giving the eulogy!" i found that funny.. i think it has to do with the little bit of self-consciousness we all have in us. everyone is afraid of failure somewhat and everyone wants approval. when you put yourself up on a pulpit to speak you basically set your self up to be judged. it presents YOU to everyone who may be listening and it frightens you because of that because you're maybe afraid that they will find the same fualts in you that you find? there are numerous reasons i'm sure you could attribute this; everyone probably has a reason a little different than others but the reasons probably all share a common link.

One is totally exposed. Any errors or blunders are right out there and available for the audience to ridicule or critique. There are no edits or rewrites -- it is live and there is only one shot to get it right.
