I have been on many cruises with 4 different cruise lines and they have never placed a hold (preliminary charged) on my card before the cruise. If you buy tours ahead of time or order a bon voyage item that will be charged.
They will ask you to give a card number so that they can set up your onboard credit line. All cruise ships do this so that you do not have to use any cash for anything on ship, except the casino. All drinks (soft drinks as well as alcaholic), purchases in the gift shops, purchases in the spa (like massages or hair care), or tours purchased on ship go on the charge tab. Then you can also add your gratuities to the tab. At the end of the cruise or the day before it ends you can arrange to pay your tab in cash. They ask for your credit card before the cruise so that they can complete all of the "tab" paperwork, along with the other things, before you get to the ship to check in.

Call your travel agent and ask them to call Carnival for you.
I have never been asked that question before.
You are obviously going to get tons of diffrent answers this way.
I know if you don't have a credit card you can put a couple of hundred dollars down and spend up to that much money. When the cash runs out you have to visit the pursers desk and replenish or stop spending.

It's a $100.00. You can also put down a cash deposit if you don't want to use a credit card. When you check in they'll ask how you want to do it. Either use the card, or give them cash. Have a great time!
