Yes. Git-mo prisoners are spies (see Geneva Convention). They could be shot. Criminals are treated as patients(or their victims are blamed). Students are coddled for fear of damaging their self esteem. Everything is relative. Unless we understand that "right" is not necessarily "nice" the USA are doomed.

It isn't nice-ness but politics that prevents us from turning Iraq into the pile of sand you mentioned. Destroying Iraq like that would pretty much end America as other countries all combined against us to end our reign of terror at genocide. I believe that Guantamo bay is not exactly the torture-ridden site that it is made out to be, but it does happen. Soldiers want revenge for losing comrades or not being home with families and take it out on the prisoners. Not all of them mind you, but some of them.
I would suggest inviting in UN inspectors (and notice I didn't say say yes when they ask, but rather ask them in). Doing so would ensure torture stops, or that the rest of the world sees we aren't doing it if we aren't. Also it gives us more of an edge when arguing for sending UN inspectors into other countries, by us being able to say we allowed them in here despite the fact we are far more powerful than you, so you should also. Which gives us the moral high ground on almost any situation that may arise with other countries.

How about our "niceness" is a victim of the bully tactics of our current administration. Our soldiers are paying the price for the soldiers who were misled by poor, or downright illegal advice and training coming from the White House.
Several Generals protested the "harsh tactics" advice and lack of peacekeeping training that our soldiers went to Iraq with.
and the US has long held that information obtained via torture is apt to be false, until this administration, that is.
The problems aren't coming from our national ideals, they are coming from incompetence and bullying.

Are you saying we should be worse than the terrorists? Our governent has come much too close to that already with all of the torture and other human rights violations. It would make no sense at all to claim to be fighting a war on terrorism and behave like terrorists ourselves. That's one of the many reasons why I think Bush should be impeached.

I can truly understand your concern. Yes it is. We observe human rights, and the rights of others. We are taught from an early childhood play nice and be nice. This is one of the things that make this country great. I just hope it is not its downfall. The citizens of the USA are to be above and beyond reproach from the rest of the world. We are not to be human but above that while the rest of the world continues on its same path.
