I believe that Jesus said it best Himself, when He said, "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." Luke 19:10.

Jesus came to seek the sinner, to die as the perfect sacrifice for man's (and woman's) sin, and to triumph over death to give us the Hope of eternal life.

John 3:16.........For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son, That whosoever shall believe in him (Has faith in) shall not perish, but have everlasting life (in heaven).

You must realize the usage of belive in the text. It's not simply believeing as in belief in the moon. It refers to having faith in Christ, who he is, what he did and what he can do.
