I grew up in Northern Virginia (Alexandria) -- very very expensive now. It is more rural in Southern Virginia (lived there under 2 years). It depends on what kind of life you want. You can always work up there and take a subway from around the central area. A lot of people do. I think if you like the woods, trees, etc. - go to southern - if you like the city life, etc. go to northern. Virginia is great though either way.

It depends on what you're looking for in a community. I live in No VA now and let me tell you - it is EXPENSIVE. Rent is darn close to what a mortgage will cost you, for example. The trade off is that the communities are for the most part, beautiful, friendly, and convenient to everything you could imagine. Well, technically convenient...the traffic is horrific here. During rush hour in places it really can take you 45 minutes to go 2.5 miles.
Southern Virginia is far more laid back and rural...if that's what you're looking for, then Southern VA is definitely for you! :)

I lived in Virginia Beach and LOVED IT. But then, I had a friend who lived in Fairfax and he loved that. Really the choice is up to you. But keep these 2 things in mind: If you live in Northern VA you have to deal with political crap because you'd be close to DC, and if you lived in Southern VA you'd be close to the 700 Club Headquarters and the PETA headquarters (both in Virginia Beach).
Sorry I couldn't actually *answer* the question. It's one you're going to have to figure out for yourself, though.
