Oh, sure. It's still frightening today. Kubrick did really well with the material.

The bipolar nature of Jack Nicholson was very effective. He starts off as a loving husband (though a misguided father), but you see the anger in him bubbling up until the explosive ending. And the ax murder was simply terrifying.

I'd say this version was even scarier than the book. In the book, it was clearly the evil of the hotel that was at work. In the movie, Kubrick played up the evil of human nature, which is more frightening than a haunted hotel. Sure, the movie showed the ghosts, but you don't really see the ghosts affecting Jack Nicholson until the very end. During the middle of the movie, it's all about his isolation and how it bugs at him.

But the book did have an excellent scene with topiary. And as someone who hates wasps, the wasps' nest scene really creeped me out.

Incidentally, I read the book while working as a security guard in a factory that was shut down for 2 weeks due to Christmas break. I was a new hire, so I wasn't acclimated to all those factory noises at night. Not the brightest of ideas, but did it enhance the creepiness factor of the book!

This movie is one of the best movies of history, just because it makes you feel so scary about what a simple condition like loneliness and the weather can do to a person... really scary but excellent movie!!!
