Because they've heard Michael Moore speak-seen Fairenheit 9/11, and stupidity seems to be the only explaination as to why a man who directed such a sinister exercise in moral frivolity, and spectacle of abject political cowardice masking itself as a demonstration of "dissenting" bravery, all crudely disguised as an exercise in seriousness could have so many American fans and be invited to speak at the Democratic National Convention.

In many ways it is the way Our Country is reported on in the News. Many News Organizations TV Radio and newsprint are far to the left and No matter What President Bush Says for Instance if he says its White they will say he's stupid and its Black.
The Old World "Western Europe" the People respect us. How can anyone Respect France? Or Russia? I mean there Goverments? They Lied and Cheated All Thru The Sanctions Prior to the Iraq war Supplying Information and Buying Black market Oil From Saddam Husssein. And when Caught Denial is the word.
I think A lot of the World Should Think Better of Our Country. It Really hasn't been that Many Years ago if It were not for our joint efforts We might all be speaking "Hitler's German" and How many more Would have gone to Those Gas chambers in Germany.
Its a Small World. We Should all Make A Stand Against the Terrorist Threat. These are not Freedom Fighters They Are Rapist & Murderers.

You say you are a business psyiology graduate and yet you use "u" in the phrasing of your question?
Should we be asking if graduate students in London are stupid or are they trying to be Internet hip?
I'm a American and I think I have a handle on world geography. I even know what a map is.
I am tolerant of other cultures and races IF they are tolerant of mine.
To ask that people are envious of Americans is somewhat arrogant. I think that people like us or don't for whatever reasons they happen to have.
I am envious of the fact that a country like Luxembourg has something like 30 holidays a year and 6 weeks vacation to start.
Here in the states we are working a 40, 50, 60 hour work week with maybe 2 weeks vacation to start and standard 10 holidays a year. But hey, I'm a American, I wont whine about it.
I voted for Bush so that part of your multi-faceted question is academic.
Cheers and give my regards to the Three Greyhounds Pub. I love that place.

It could be do to the fact that bad news makes better headlines than good news does. The US is almost always the first nation to come to the aid of a country hit by natural or man-made disasters and we generally give the most money. Because of that maybe we think we have some sort of blithe entitlment to stick our noses in other peoples business. But the fact remains that when something bad happens in the world, the first place other governments and their people turn to for aid and assistance is the United States. Maybe we are stupid....because regardless of how much we are "hated" or how much you think we are "the joke of the planet"...we still keep giving it.
Ya know, if you continually keep biting the hand that feeds you, so to speak, eventually the hand will stop comming out. So my question to you is...who is more stupid? The Americans or the people who knock then one minute and then turn around and ask them for aid the next?

Bush being president doesn't really help. The whole war against Iraq didn't help. Being one of the most protective and largest countries in the world doesn't really help either. Look at our country, the people of America are ruled by the TV and fashion industry and everyone believes that if a celebrity wears one item, then they need to be wearing that item to be cool. We are becoming a nation that will be poor by the time baby boomers hit middle age, simply due to the fact that the Nation's people are going into debt, spending everything they have and not saving a dime! Everyone wants a perfect body, they want the most expensive car, they want to look like the chicks on TV and this is causing youngsters to grow up and work so they can spend their money on "things" and not on what really matters in life. Family Faith and Friends. Working hard doesn't matter to people anymore. Everyone in America has become fake and not of their own uniqueness.

Paul, I think the Brits by nature are offensive but that doesn't answer your question. You're putting all Americans in the same pot. That's like me saying, "Why is is that the Brits have poor grammar? Or is it just the graduate students?" Not everyone hates Americans. Mostly it's the people who are too young or too stupid to know the good we've done in the world. Some just have to focus on our military presence in other parts of the world, which, by the way, benefits a lot more countries that just the U.S.

Well, coming from a Canadian I think I find it is a lack of common sense and geography knowledge. I had a customer come through a drive thru (2 hours north of Toronto) in the middle of July with skiis in the back of the car asking where the snow was. (THEY WERE FROM THE STATE OF NEW YORK!!) Don't people research before going on a vacation. We are pretty much the same except we are more tolerant of other people and their cultures. I just find that they don't want to know anything that isn't from their own world of the United States and lack the knowledge to understand other cultures.

I'm mostly shocked that a graduate student would use such broad, monolithic terms in a question. Not "everyone" thinks Americans are stupid. Stupidity is not exclusive to America, nor has it infected every American citizen. Certainly I've met my share of stupid Americans but I've also met enlightened, witty, informed citizens of the USA as well. If a person believes that every single American is an idiot then I believe it does nothing but reveal just how inadequately intelligent the holder of the belief truly is. Certainly, you can not agree with the politics of a country but you should also keep in mind that not all Americans believe the same things, not all of them are Bush supporters (which is certainly becoming more and more true by the day) and not all of them are white, xenophobic hicks. It's unfortunate that their head of state makes it seem so but and he is the one making decisions regarding "international police actions," not your average American citizen.

Because other countries are bombarded with propaganda (negative toward the US) with few to none alternative sources of information.
The very nature of the US as a free nation to include a free press allows for negative feedback on America even from within, which is then highlighted by the foreign press.
What they don't include (and what makes it propaganda) is the alternative views and alternative news sources within the US that do not fit in with their agenda.
If I grew up my whole life in a foreign country being force fed a stream of negative news by my local media about the US then I too would think these must be the dumbest people on earth.
I would never know how ignorant I was and that I in fact lacked the freedom and breadth of information of the very people that I denigrate.
That is the crime of a closed minded society, government and media.

I think that although the United States is the best country as far as opportunities and freedom is concerned, the people that populate this county (Americans) have tendencies to be arrogant and self centered (as evidenced by the "America is best, screw the rest" type sayings).
Americans have slowly moved away from being family oriented, into being more self-centered and self-focused. Now, it's "all about me".
Plus, our blatant disregard for the environment and our lack of education (in general) seem to add to the "stupid American" misconception.
I was born and raised in America. I love America. Although the life I live is the only one I know, I can understand why the world's perception of us would be less than sparkling.

We are not tough enough, that's why we are stupid, To politically correct that's is stupid.. Other country's know America would never do anything that might infringe on your rights. In the meantime they just killed 3,000 people, we are laughed at , know one should have rights if you murdered someone. If your not a citizen of this country you should not have rights in the first place. See how quick thing would change. That word rights has caused a lot of damage for the wrong people.Maybe there should be an amendment to the meaning of rights under certain circumstances
