Smile! My advice is to smile. even if you don't feel better, people will wonder what you are thinking.
If that doesn't work, read some of the jokes in this thread from www.reddit.com:

Very stupid trick, that you don't feel like doing when you're sad, but that actually works: exercise!
Ride a bike for 10 miles, get a good run, go swin for a solid hour, whatever you choose- but do it until you are extremely tired : your body has a way to fight sadness and depression with wonderful happiness hormones, called endorphines, which are released during exercise (among other things).
If you are still sad tomorrow, do it again.
And the next day.
And the next.
If you don't feel really better after 2 weeks, maybe it's time to consult a doctor.
Good luck!

Well why are you sad? I get very depressed sometimes, suicidal even! I'd never do it but I know what it feels like to be sad too. Really sad. Find the source of sadness. When I find the source I dwell in my misery. Alot of people might advise against this but it's a method that works for me..I dwell and I dwell, until I can deal with what has caused me to be sad...then I can truly move past it. Good luck.

I think your probably more lonely than sad. I also feel more people are lonely rather than depressed. I know when I'm feeling sad it just takes a phone call from someone I care about. But that doesn't always happen. Sometimes when I am sad, I can't force myself to call or see anyone or there's just no one around. The only thing that helps is my dog, cause I have to take her out and usually I feel better after that, so maybe if you got a pet? We don't really know your circumstances to its hard to tell.

Do something you really enjoy. Spend some money at the mall or go have an ice cream sunday. Why not help someone. Go to a nursing home and be a friend. Things will look better tomorrow!

Listen to some happy music or watch a good movie. If you can't snap out of it, see your doctor about taking Lexapro.

laugh it out! laugh until you cry, then you'll wonder if you're crying out of laughing or because of the sadness that you're trying to hide. either way, it feels good afterwards. trust me! done that like a crazy gal laughing at things out of nowhere :)
