I have internet at work but I want it at home too. I only have a cell phone and I don't subscribe to cable. I don't want to pay extra charges on my cell service for internet access there - any suggestions?

You can get cell internet. They have unlimited plans or regular. However they're a bit spendy and not as fast.

You don't have to subscribe to cable to get cable modem access. We don't have cable yet we have cable internet. It's about $40 to $50 a month. Don't go for any of the super beefed up plans.. just ask for the cheapest possible plan. It's just fine unless you're a hard core gamer or something.

There are also wireless networks going up here and there that you can tap into at no charge. Some are illegal so be careful. They have the router that is connected 24/7 to the internet and all you would need is a compatible wireless network adapter.. basically a PCMCIA or USB device for your laptop or an intneral card or USB device for your desktop.

Be careful also of hackers. Setting up a computer to pick up a signal from outside your house.. is allowing those same people or others to get in to your computer. Get the proper security features set up.

You're either going to have to get cable or satellite or you can't get Internet access unless you have a wireless connection and can get a signal from someone.

you can get dsl through the phone line without having phone service, or you can get satetelite, but sattelite is expensive. dsl is normally about 24.00 a month and up depending on the speed you want, you can get it through AOL, or your phone service, Yahoo, and many other providers.
Don't piggyback off someone elses wireless unless you have permission, it is illegal and is considered theft of services. I am amazed at the lack of morals of some of the answers in here, who think stealing is just OK. Please don't do that

cable internet. Don't bother with satellite - it's expensive and it's slow and usually you need a phone line to upload content.

Get a wireless connection. You can often tap into other people signals if you live in close proximity to someone else's house / apartment.

Get wireless, if you have a laptop, you can take it into best buy or circuit city and they can install a lan wireless card for you (not sure how much that costs however).
