If u only have 1 day, it is best to go to Djemma,. There is a lot to see and do in that area. The Koutubia Mosque is there, there is also a museum close by, of course u can c that awesome square, eat from food stalls or restaurants, buy trinkets from the stores (near the plants inside the square) that only the local visit; the prices are fixed and the same for all, tourist and locals. You can also hang out in the park that is close by and people watch, grab a calech (horse drawn buggy), change money, make international phone calls from the row of public phones, (buy a cheap phone card-but not off the streets though-it might not have any minutes), or visit the other market that is close by Djemma and see the artisans at work and watch the storks fly back and forth to their nests. What fabulous photo ops. Go inside the medina and follow the crowds, see the wool brightly colored and freshly dyed cascading down the rafters, go deeper and visit the magic area where they used to sell slaves, but now u see exotic animal skins (shameful) but fascinating , lizards dried and live, falcons in cages, huge globs of amber, teas and all sorts of herbs for whatever u think ails u, hang out until it starts to get dark, then go back to the square and visit some of my friends at stall #15 I think (Abdul), what they heck, they were all my friends, I LOVE MARAKESH and plan to go back in March 07-already bought my ticket!
