Who (besides teachers) says they're underpaid? Go do some research and come back with facts.
Here -- I've done a little research for you:

State average public school teacher salaries ranged from those in California ($56,283), Connecticut ($55,367), and New Jersey ($54,158) at the high end to South Dakota ($32,416), North Dakota ($33,869), and Mississippi ($34,555) at the low end.

Maybe they are not underpaid, maybe everyone else is overpaid? Most people could easily live on a fraction of what they make.
Most Americans spend on hair care what the average person in a 3rd world country makes as their salary.

Why are a lot of doctors/nurses/firemen underpaid?
Should money that celebraties earn be less... I think so, pump the money made from movies back into the country and spend it on health care, emergancy services and education!

huh teachers make more than your local Firefighters and EMT's, they work more then teachers. Teachers get the summer off in most cases plus they get 1 or 2 days off a month for teachers work shops (drive by the school not a teacher to be seen) teachers get every national holiday off. and even when a teacher is a crappy teacher they still get their yearly pay raise and can't be fired because of the union crap... don't give me the crap of under paid teachers

Because they will work for what they are offered. It is simple , if no one will work for the offered pay then the pay scale will rise till someone will come and teach. Therefore reason tells us the teachers are willing to work for what they are being offered. It also helps to drive the wages up if there are not many qualified people to do the job and since there happens to be a goo gob of people "qualified " to teach , well there you have your answer.

Because there is no immediate return on the investment.
And because there is no need to 'good ol boy' kickbacks.
It's a tax thing. Compare a teacher's salary in the US to a contractor that signs on to build a road.

because each county has its own tax rolls but its averaged out . dependng on what part of the US you live in more rural areas teachers average 35-40 thousand a yr ,,a suggestion if you want better pay and strongly support an issue take it to the government lobby for better pay ,support your local school district and pay your taxes till we as americans see this as our responsibility nothing will get better
