Start by just standing in the door and just taking a good look at the room you have to tidy. Assess what really needs tackling.
Then, start with the floor - clear it. Once this is done it will make the room look way tidier and bigger already! If you have laundry on the floor, then put dirty out for the wash and clean away in your wardrobe or drawers. Other stuff should be put away where it should really be, like on a shelf or in a cupboard or whatever.
Then clear any surfaces, like desks or tops of drawers etc. Again put stuff where it belongs or should be (e.g. dirty clothes into laundry), and chuck out any rubbish (having a black sack might help with this). Again clearing off the surfaces should make the room look way tidier and bigger.
After you've done this, go and have another look from the doorway. See what is left to tidy and do the same with that! After that you might have to dust if its dusty, or vacuum the floor, but then you're done. you should have a nice spanking shiny new room.
N.B. Put your favourite music on... it motivates.

If you haven't touched it in three months, think seriously about putting it in a box or THROWing it away. (that's what I do with my desk at work here about twice a year - important stuff.. of course I have to file or do something with it... but everythig else, gets tossed)
Go through mail and other misc. paperwork EVERY day.. spend 5 to 10 minutes to go through it and either file it or put it in a meaningful spot - not on the desk or bed or stuffed in the backpack.
Put like things together instead of scattered.
Have theme walls or theme corners. i.e. sports corner, crafts corner, etc.
Get EVERYTHING off the floor. Have floor space.
Candles are cool. You don't have to light them to have the room smell nice. One scent, not too many to mix and confuse themselves.
Not sure what else to say.
At my home.. when I get sick and tired of looking at a mess.. I just get EVERYthing off the floors and tables. Also look high.. even though you don't look there specifically, it is seen by you and especially by others. the top of my fridge gets cluttered too. Doesn't need to be. So I clean it all off.
You may also need shelving. If you have a bunch of stuff and no shelves anywhere or cabinets.. where the flip could you put it? nowhere.. so sometimes you need to add some organizational items.
I hate making my bed. I simply lay the sheets over the bed, then put the comforter over the sheets to where the sheets aren't poking from underneath. Do the pillows within the comforter like hotels do. If you're a kid with parents though.. they make you make your bed. Personally I was LUCKY and able to compromise.. I didn't mind doing the dishes.. but hated making my bed.. I thought it was sorta pointless as long as it looked fairly neat. So I did dishes three times a week to offset making my bed every day. Some parents compromise more than others.

Steps to cleaning room.
1. pick up all the dirty clothes and put them in a hamper or go and put them in the washer (sorted by colors)
2. put away your clean clothes where they belong, nice and tidy.
3. pick up garbage that is anywhere around your room and throw it away.
4. Organize all your stuff so it is neat and tidy.
5. Make your bed.
6. get into the habit of keeping your room clean.

Separate the clothes from the trash. Throw away the trash, put the clothes in the laundry basket. Put all the extra stuff in the places they belong such as the closet or certain bins. Sweep and vacuum and if you want to organize a closet or bin, go for it!!! And for a nice touch, clean your mirrors with some windex and/or dust the dusty places in your room like the t.v. or your ceiling fan, and/or spray some spray made for rooms to keep freshness and good smell! Try sprays such as Febreeze or other spray products. Now, you should be done! Enjoy your clean, comfy room, and try to keep it that way! : )

Put things away. Try to get organized. But bins and baskets, they always help. Go through your drawers and closets, get rid of what you don't wear or doesn't fit you. A good rule is if you haven't worn it in a year to get rid of it. If you have a lot of magazines, go through them and tear out the pages that you want and throw the rest of the magazine away. I do this now, and it saves a lot of space. After I while I take the stack and look through them again, then I take a mini notebook that I have and write down things that I want to buy or look at that were on those pages. Good luck!

Make your bed first. That's probably about 30% of the room right there. Then, work from top to bottom. Organizing, cleaning, dusting and vacuum when everything is in its place.

If you have too much stuff, making it impossible to organize...then get a big box and throw things in it that you dont need or that you never use. Too many things that you never use but are holding on to actually keep you from finding the things you do use and need. The little stuff that you do use..seperate it into groups and buy an organizer to put in your closet.

Throw EVERYTHING on the bed - vacuum the floor. Take everything one at a time and put it away or make piles on your floor if certain things go in the same area. With all of it in one place, it won't feel so overwhelming PLUS if you put it all on your bed, you will force yourself to finish as you are probably going to want to sleep at some point.
