Fiesta Bowl meltdown aside, the Irish were a very good team last year. This year they return almost everyone from an offense that could rack up Playstation-like scores. Their Achilles heel last year was their defense. They got down to MSU by 21 and let Drew Stanton throw all over them, gave up that huge pass against USC on 4th and 9, and got torched by OSU a couple of times. With another year of experience under their belts, I would expect them to be at least somewhat improved this year.
Sure Brady Quinn is a pretty good QB and Charlie Weiss is a pretty good coach, but the important thing to remember is that absolutely nothing that's said in the preseason matters. Last year the Irish had the top 3 teams on their schedule: USC, Tennessee, and Michigan. Lee Corso was saying they wouldn't win a game among their first six. What happened? They went 4-2, losing each game by 3 points. Michigan went 7-5 and the Vols went 5-6. They also played Pitt and Purdue, two teams that were highly regarded at the beginning of the season and ranked 23 and 22 respectively when ND played them. We all know what happened, Notre Dame won by 21 in both those games.
Looking at their schedule this year, they have a fair amount of legitimate games. Notre Dame plays Georgia Tech, Penn St., Michigan, Michigan St., Purdue, Stanford, UCLA, Navy, North Carolina, Air Force, Army, USC. By comparison, Ohio St. plays Northern Illinois, Texas, Cincinnati, Penn St., Iowa, Bowling Green, Michigan St., Indiana, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan. Eliminating the teams that they have in common, let's see how the rest of their schedule stacks up. OSU plays Texas (sans Vince Young) in Austin, but then again, ND plays at USC, so those cancel out. BGSU and NIU are pretty good, as far as MAC teams go, but then again Navy and Air Force are pretty good, as far as service academies go. Canceling out IU/Purdue and Army/Cincy (didn't the cadets beat Cincy last year?), that leaves with 4 teams for each. Notre Dame has a touted Georgia Tech team followed by Stanford, UCLA, and UNC. None of these teams has been great recently, but UNC managed to knock off Miami a couple years back, and you never know what can happen. OSU on the other hand is left with a solid Iowa team, then Minnesota, a perennial underacheiver, even with tremendous talent, Northwestern, and hapless Illinois. I know that's not how it works in the real world, but I don't see much difference between Notre Dame's schedule and Ohio State's, so should we not buy into their hype either? The answer is yes. As I said before, nothing in the preseason matters, so don't buy into any of the hype for any time. It's still July after all! I personally think they have all the right ingredients the make a run at the national championship, but I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Half the fun in college football are the pre-season predictions of national titles. Notre Dame returns a lot from a formidable team last year that got robbed against Southern Cal. Say Brady Quinn all you want, but he is an excellent quarterback flourishing in Charlie Weiss' new system. Charlie Weiss is proving to be an excellent coach. Willingham brought in some talent while he was there, but could not win games. Weiss is winninng with that talent and has done an excellent job recruiting. Notre Dame is going nowhere indeed. They are staying right where they are, which is a top 10 football team.

Notre Dame's toughest games will be Michigan, Penn St., and USC. They have Michigan and Penn St. at Notre Dame. Why don't they get a tougher schedule. The rest of the schedule is kind of a joke. Georgia Tech-that might be a good game-, Michigan St., Purdue, Standford, UCLA (overrated big time, saw that in the bowl game last year), Navy, North Carolina, Air Force, and Army. Why are they playing the three military schools? Navy is tradition, but why the other two? So if they can win against the only 3 schools that can beat them, then they will most likely take a spot in the national championship game. But Ohio St. is way ahead of them. As we saw in the Fiesta Bowl last season.

Because last year Brady Quinn proved that he can play with the best of them. When compared to TEXAS and USC of last year he puts Notre Dame right up there with them. That and the fact that 80% of the same team is returning to play this season. They look like one of the teams that will be playing for the National Championship

Notre Dame will have a fine year but they are not going to win or even play for the National championship. Auburn will play Ohio State. Notre Dame will lose two games, Georgia Tech in the opener and USC.

Brady Quinn just about says it all. It should be fairly clear to any educated football fan that Notre Dame is one of the teams to beat this year. Charlie Weiss came in and turned that program around in just one season when no one expected them to finish over five hundred last year. One illegal Reggie Bush push into Leinart's back kept Notre Dame out of the national championship game. They have the entire complement of players back with the first batch of Weiss recruits and a year of succesful football under their belts. This team will be in the Top 5 all year and even witht their absurdly difficult schedule, it is hard to imagine this team coached by Weiss losing more than one game.

I think that you are dead right. I think that Notre Dame is a great school and everything, I just do not think that they are going to win. They do have a great coach in Charlie Weis, but they are going to not do as well this year as they did last. I think that Brady Quinn will be about the sixth best quarterback in college this year

Charlie Weiss is bringing in good recruits and is doing a good job (so far) of resurrecting Dame's rep, but the hype is just that...hype. Dame's schedule is going to be killer once more and will prevent them from having a big season. It's long past time for them to either 1. ease up on the virtual Big-10 conference schedule or 2. join a conference...either way, they can ease back from playing a "big" or a "rivalry" game every week of the season, which has to wear them down over the course of a season...case in point...the USC game last season...even Touchdown Jesus couldn't save them from heartbreak...oh, by the way, y'all need to trash those green jerseys...every time I see them wear 'em, they lose (USC, Gator Bowl, etc.)

ahhhh a fellow notre dame hater. the truth about Quinn is he is overated, and doesnt have a prayer when you put pressure on him. he cant make plays. also i think that ty willingham had the same record as wiess did his first year. i wouldnt be surprised if people understand what weiss is doing in his schemes, and come prepaired to rip it apart. much like ohio state did in the bowl game.

They play probably one of the easiest schedules for the team ever. They could easily go 10-1 and get the bid for the National Championship.
Last year, the team was vastly overrated. ND football sells, so you will continue to hear loads about them.
