Working for yourself. If you enjoy covering articles and submitting ideas to magazines or newspapers, that's freelancing. It doesn't always pay well in the start, but if you build up your name, the money gets better.

a person who pursues a profession without a long-term commitment to any one employer.

It means that you do the profession but you work on your own. You don't work for any specific company.
