people have been walking around with cats and stuff and where do they get them? any advice where to get pets fellow runescapers?

go up to computers and do quests or you can trade money for pets in banks or stores

go onto a member's server and there's a cat lady just west of varrock and you have to do some quest (which takes place like east of varrock) and then you get a kitten which you can raise to a cat then sell to people who need a cat to eat rats later on and you get like 100 death runes for your troubles.
I'm admittedly fuzzy on the details, so just go to zybez.com under "quests" and look up Gertrude's Cat (methinks) and that'll give you what you need.

You have to be a member to get a pet, and me not being a member would not have the slightest clue where to look for one.

I used to play it and my friends had them. I think you need to be a member to get them. You get them either by trading or finding them. Look on the world map for places where you think you can buy them.
