I am almost in the same situation. Here are some of the things we do.
1. I take the kids to the Police Station (where I work) and let every one else play with them, while I finish paper work.
2. Go to the park, feed the ducks in the pond near the park.
3. If I have enough Gas in the car for the week, then we play "which way" , this is when I get in the car and the kids tell me what way to turn, and try to get me lost. we stop to pick wile flowers, odd or different kinds of rocks, and other different objects on the way. Then after exactly one hour (often 3 hours) I head home, and we see who can be the most creative with what we found on the way, like flower arrangements, rock fountians, and so on.
4. Bord games, card games, movies at home with pop-corn, hide and seek in the house, and other indoor games and crafts
5. we like to pack food, and simply hang out at a park where they play live music, have play gyms for the kids, and a lake. they do it only on Sunday's.
6. We have several times donated our time at the SPCA. It gives the kids the oppertunity to spend time with needy animals, and to learn about them. I hate kids that abuse animals and the parents allow it, but this helps children better understand animals and their needs.
the list goes on, it is strange how many different things we parents come up with when we have children. I think money delutes the idea of having pure family fun, and gives the children a faulse view on life, so your question is a very good one and I praise you for it.

1.Go to the beach. make some sandwiches at home and make a day of it. If you are not close to the ocean try a lake.
2.Grab the stale bread from off the top of the frig and go feed the ducks, pigeons, whatever.
3.Call around and see if any museums are free in your area. Here in San Diego there is a different museum each month that is free.
4.Go visiting, friends you haven't seen in a while family whoever you enjoy hanging out with. And they will probably feed you!
5. Have a water fight. Great if it's hot out and you get to vent all you frustration on your husband and kids for being such pains in the @$$es!
6. leave the whole whiney lot of them at home and go to your best girl friends house!

Whiney spouse syndrome - I get the picture. Much depends on your community living environment, whether there is recreation, etc available within a short distance, and the age of your children and age span for ideas of keeping them busy, and....well the pennyless feature to the problem is troublesome too. I wonder if that means you both have a limited income or doesn't want to participate, or fund your activities. Reading together, home based educational activities, libraries often provide story times to children on regular days or nights, communitiy based children activites (depends on age of yours). And for the whiney spouse, we need to muffle it, especially if it's a high pitch whine, cuz that can drive anyone bats.

Well make a family night. Plan it with your children & spouce. Do this in a few days to build up the excitement in the children. Popcorn, maybe a movie you have on DVD that has not been watched in awhile, games, photos, family videos - children love to see themselves when they were babies. Family nights are so important to family relationships and it never hurts to bring in your religion. Share family time, its easy, fun and free with great rewards!

First, you file for divorce, take your kids to your parents, and go looking for a new companion. You sound like you are very unhappy in your current life, maybe you should consider a change. Otherwise, you can go to the park, find a canl, and let the kids play in the water, go camping, fishing, hiking, just generally be outside and enjoy the summertime before winter shows up again.
