We asked people, five or six years ago, what's the right way to make some money. They said that we should charge people who were already paying too much money for less effective advertising elsewhere.

Only specific consensus is to charge job posters and real estate lisitngs.

So, we charge for job postings in NY, LA, SF, considering a few more to minimize spamvertising. Also, apartment brokers asked us the charge them for rental listings in NY, so we just started doing that.

Craigslist charges for some ad categories in certain cities. As far as I know apartment rentals and job postings In NY and job postings in LA are not for free. That's how they make money...

The ads are not all free. In California you pay to use the service, thus allowing the rest of us to use it freely. Says so on the website. I use craigs daily :)
