My mother has allstate car insurance. She hit a deer in New York State and had to pay the 200 deductable, whereas my brother who has state farm insurance, and also hit a deer in New York State didn't have to pay his deductable of 250. They both had collision on their respective vehicles.

The correct answer to this question is...both scenarios are correct-they paid for different deductibles. It all depends on what you set up as a deductible when you get the insurance. Your brother has a "0" deductible, but is paying a higher monthly premium for it. Your mother evidently wanted to save some money on her insurance premiums so she went with a $200 deductible, which saves her money every month on insurance, but, as she found out, costs her the first $200 every time she makes a claim. That's the tradeoff for saving money each month.

Your brother didn't really save any money because he has been paying higher premiums all this time, which easily added up to more than $200. But he wanted the convenience of not having to write a check for the first X dollars.

Hope this info helped.
