Goth actually started as a genre of music and that sort of lifestyle which branched off of the punk scene in the UK. It was categorized as a darker punk sound.
It wasn't until the '90s that goth became a different thing altogether then it had started from. Goth culture was no longer associated with the music it became a fashion tend as well drawing inspiration from the victorian era.
Goth is now meant to stand for people who choose to live their life in a mysterious, dark, morbid way, with mood playing a significant role in their culture. While many assume goth culture is based on a rebellion against society it actually is far less so then many and most of the other subcultures we see in modern society today. Goth is about astetics now (the way we look) over beliefs and politics.

Another newer subcluture which has branched out of the goth subculture is Emo ( short for emotional ). This is a cluture which draws much of it's fashion inspiration from Goth, at least in popular culture. This culture however, takes the emotional mood side of the equation to a new level, with a constant cry for attention and pity for their sad lives and selves. Emo focuses on defining what is wrong with ourselves and others in the world we live in, but not attempting to fix them or change them, just declaring them and feeling sorry because of it.

As for the comment about that 75% of goths self mutilate I would like to see a write source for this information because as far as I know I have never heard this statistic and I have to disagree. (and I have done significant research and spent quite alot of time reserching and studying the subject as I am a student of human behaviour). As for the 75% commit suicide I challange you the same way as above, this is a far fetched statistic that I believe you made up for shock value.

Not all goths are depressed and not all those depressed are goths. Personally I write a LOT of dark poems and songs and my artwork is slightly morbid but I'm not a full out goth (I wear black just because it slims me down a bit ^_~). It's just a way of life, a way to get through the pain of teenage angst. Being diagnosed with depression, I've turned to the darker side of life for a LOT of comfort

I have few friends that try to be goth but they're not that dramatic. Everyone in my junior high has a pretty high self-esteem and sometimes it annoys the crap out of me that everyone thinks they're better.

75 percent of goths injure themselves physically, 70% try to kill themselves. I used to goth around for couple years and i know its true. At one point, it is a way of expressing yourself when you become a teen, it starts then actually, at the other point it is just trying to get attention.

Sometimes, its because stuff happened in their life to cause those feelings. My best friend is/ was semi goth, all her grandmothers died, her aunt, her mom had gotten breast cancer and ppl made fun of her in school. She was suicidal for a period of time, you can't just judge someone by how they look.
