While the majority of people of the cloth do not live this way, it is true that there are some that do.

If you look at it from a socio-economic view, one might say that people worship with people they are similar too - therefore the very wealthy would likely want to worship with a minister that projects affluence and prosperity.

From a spiritual point of view, you might say that some ministers and their congregation feel that it is important to for the church to be prosperous as a symbol that the community is prosperous - and folks might donate to the church even when times are tight for them, feeling that a prosperous church means a strong and protected community.

From a power point of view you must realize that the Organization of the Religion is an entity unto itself and if it wants to represent it's community on a state, national or world level, it need some people that can participate in these circles. By that I mean both have the financial means to travel around and do the lobbying etc. that needs to be done, in addition to being able to socialize with these folks on an equal footing.

There are lots of reasons why the leaders might be able to live better than their congregation, and the opposite is also true. There are ministries where the clergy is the poorest man in town because he gives everything to everyone else.

The majority of ministries, I think, have a minister on an equal economic level with the majority of it's congregation. After all, the majority of the money that a ministry receives is in contributions from the members of the congregation - and they are not likely to elevate their minister high above them. A percentage of the "take" might go to the leaders of the religion - so they can teach new clergy, promote and oversea the religion for problems or good PR.

Once there is an organization it needs to be treated more like a business - and certainly in the business world we see the leaders living in luxury like a king while the people they rule over live in near poverty. In Government too.

Peace!

it is not true. our minister makes less than most of the church members. buddhist monks, and many kind of monks do not live in luxury. many religious leaders do not live luxury. however if you are talking about evangalists on television then i think that is a terrible racket. But most legitimate religious leaders are not super rich. Some are very poor. Llamas from tibet usually are not rich.

True. True. That's because there are a bunch of religious followers out there that give away their money to them for nothing in return. Binny Hinn used to stay in a hotel I worked for in Hawaii when he came. He used to stay in the presidential suite for two weeks ($2,500/night) and have limo's take him everywhere. Used to order lavish dinners and wear super nice clothes and have many servants with him. Same goes with that idiot Billy Graham also. Can't believe how many people give them money - what a waste.

Because religion is often about power.
Consider Karl Marx's conflict theory. He said that people are in constant conflict over the finite resources in a society, and the group of people on top in that conflict (the "ruling class") institutes morals and norms in order to give them an advantage in that struggle and to keep themselves on top.
I think that religion is one way to keep that power.

although this seems true in some circumstances, there are religious pioneers who lived like the majority if not worse off. Mother Teresa and Ghandi to name a few.

It has to do with the power we give our leaders. We tend to offer up our money and our respect to those who choose certain roles in society. Another great question is why do we vote politicians into power, and not put any checks on their activities while in power. (For example, we give them the power to vote behind closed doors on their own salaries! and they are supposed to be SERVANTS of the people they represent.)

Because of the distortion of the very doctorines that they are preching. Look back in history to the monks and there hermitages, they lived in self-assumed poverty so as to understand the purity of life.
