Yes - like any harddrive it reserves a small proportion for its file system (e.g. FAT32).
If you look at your PC harddrive - it may be (for example) 20GB, but useable space will be somewhere around 18.9GB.
It needs this space to function properly.

The reason that the space is 892MB is because if you use a PC, Windows can only format the hard drive on your iPod a certain way (FAT32), giving you less space than normal. Macs can format the hard drive in an iPod differently, so a Mac-Formatted iPod will have 1GB space. Moreover, some space on the iPod is taken for some of the software it installs in itself.

All memory designations for all things computer are like that. It has to do with the way that computers calculate memory and also because the people that sell us these things round off the number to make it sound better, in addition to the fact that an ipod as some software on it already so that it can run properly.

Sadly it is normal. When the ipod gets formatted, it takes some room for the system files that allow you to play songs or games or view pictures. I personally think they should make an ipod that is 1.43GB so that when it formats, it will TRULY be 1GB

Absoluteley normal,
Dont hav to fight with apple.
Coz, 1GB is not equal to 1000mb.
Pls try to understand, 1024bytes = 1kb
1024kb = 1mb
1024mb = 1gb.
More over, the drive will eat some mega bytes for file allocation table.
Thats why it shows like that.
