I am studying law but when I read disparaging remarks
and jokes about lawyers (What do you call a lawyer at
the bottom of the ocean? A start.) I worry.
Do lawyers really command such little respect out there?

Its just a joke. Don't take it too seriously.

It's not that lawyers command so little respect. The problem is that a few bad lawyers have gotton everyone a reputation for being ambulance chasers, lying to win and filing petty suites. I think a lot of it is hype from movies but people believe what they hear. I would keep studying, just keep a since of humor about it an maintain your morals and standards, people will respect you for taking a joke and standing for what you believe.

I'm not one. However, it's out there. I think you have to develop a tough skin for these things. I think part of it is that a small percent of the lawyer population just wants $$$. However, the majority of the rest of the population might just be jealous. Who knows why people are such jerks?

I think the 80/20 rule applies here. 20% of the lawyer population ruins the reputation of all the good the other 80% accomplish. You command the respect you deserve by the decisions YOU make and how YOU conduct yourself.....It's up to YOU.....

I'm an atty and could care less. In fact, I find some lawyer joke to be pretty funny.

dont worry.....do you think rabbis jews or priests sit around contemplating their calling because of crude jokes....just learn as much as you can an when you become a lawyer practice to the best of your ability!....hey who do people call on when they're in trouble? lawyers! so who has the last laugh!...good luck! :o)

There are a lot of lawyers out there that will do alot of things to get paid. Doesn't matter if you're innocent, doesn't matter whose reputation gets ruined just so long as they get that money.
