In 2003, the German firm DHL acquired Airborne Express to become the 3rd largest player in the small-package delivery business (behind UPS and Fed-Ex).

What advantages/benefits do they have over UPS and Fed-Ex?

DHL needs to develop a strong perception in North America. for example fed-x is knowen to be fast only because there service offerings are only over night. so the perception is a fast service. DHL if it wants to increase it market should be investing equally into China and other asian markets as there ecomony is very strong and is also very stable.
Airbourne is a good company but no one has heard of them so they have no image.

I run a shipping department and have found that the only advantages is their rates. ups and fed ex tend to be more reliable and more expensive. If you watch and track you dhl shipping they will credit your account for the shipment when their late. I'd suggest using them for general shipping but use ups or fed ex for anything really important.
