All those effect wars.
Geography can also determine a nations success at expanding, defending itself and protecting its culture.
for example, the Alps helped protect Rome in its infancy.
Constantinople was so important precisly because if its geography.
The British empire was so succesfull because of its Navy. Why a Navy, because of Geography.

It is a big factor. The fact that the middle east is so arid but fertile allowed the storage of grain and foodstuffs without spoiling which allowed farmers to have some leisure time which they used to make their lives more rewarding. The people of New Guinea are about as smart as any people on earth, but still live in the stone age because they must hunt fresh food every day. Geography is huge. Ask the people of New Orleans!
