I have a dell computer. It is pretty new. The DVD/CD Drive is not responding when I press the open/close button and when I do get it open it does not read the disk. It doesn't respond at at all. Any suggestions. If I take it to get fixed would that cost more than buying an external drive?

If its still pretty new, then that means you must still fall into the warranty? Call Dell and ask them if you are still under warranty and they might be able to have someone actually come to your home and fix it for you.

If it cant read the driver, then the only solution I can think of is to open up your tower and disconnect it and then connect it again. It requires some hardware tweaking, but if you dont think you can do it, then just ask Dell if they can help you.

External drivers are really cheap these days. I bought mine for only $50, but it is a little slower than the internal DVD burner I have on my laptop.

When your system boots up does the green light blink? Have you moved the Computer since it stopped working?

I would look at a couple of things.
1. In Cmos if you hit F2 when the computer is in the dell startup screen this will take you into Cmos make sure that it is seen in cmos it will be the second drive most times. The setting is set to Auto Detect.
2. Open case unplug the power from the back of it and plug it back in sometimes with vibration and dust you will loose a good connection.
3. I would do the same for the ribbon cable same thing it will loose a connection if to much dust or bumps or what ever.

If that does not work then it is possible that it is just dead.

If your computer is still under warranty then Dell will send you a new one for free and you will need to send back the old one.

To answer your question no an external is a little more expensive how ever you do not have to have a dell CD Rom you can go to any PC store and get a black one to place back in make sure to look at the jumpers on the back of the cd-rom and place them in the same on the new CD-Rom normal it will be set to Master drive

Sounds like the drive is bad. If it still is under warranty then you could call Dell tech support. Which really stinks, which also means that you will spend hours talking to some dude in India, who you will not be able to understand. I assume you have a Desktop PC and not a laptop, so if you are halfway computer savvy, you can go out and get a new one for about $39 for a DVD ROM/ CDRW Drive, or an internal DVDRW drive for about $50 or so. You should be able to remove the old one and replace it yourself. This will give you a lot less headache then dealing with the award winning tech support at Dell.

Is the CD stress SATA or IDE? unwell try itemizing the solutions if its one or the different. SATA: try plugging it in the most suitable SATA port on the set of the motherboard (once you've 4 sata ports, try plugging it into the most suitable one). This looks to unlink it from the troublesome drives, this has worked in the previous with my journey. IDE: purely be particular you've the IDE cable plug carry close plugged into the CD stress, because the troublesome drives are SATA, also purely be particular you're plugging the most perfect part in.

i work at an IT consulting company when we have issues like that one of the 1st things we try is to uninstall and reinstall the device
all you have to do is
right click on my computer
click on manage
click on device manager
on the right side youll see a list of devices
hit the + by your dvd/cd rom
then right click on the name of the device it will show up right underneath dvd/cd rom drives
then click uninstall
then at the very top of the chain youll see your computer name
right click on that
then click scan for hardware changes
the computer will do the rest
it will reinstall the dvd/cd rom by itself
hope that works

the problem is either the drive is not conncted properly or there must have been some installation problem. so go to settings and go into control panel.click on add a new hardware . then it will give u all the instructions . before that u must see if the drive is connceted properly.
