You may not need a passport if you are going out of the US and come back before the end of this year. But it will save you a lot of hassle traveling outside the country and MOST IMPORTANTLY, a passport is required of all US citizens to reenter the USA starting January 1, 2007. Once you get the passport you will be set for 10 years. The web site below will answer all of your questions about passports. There is a section that answers questions about passports for children.

Passports are issued by the US Department of State. But you can get the application at your local post office. If not, just go online to the passport office web site below. You will need two small photos to go with your application and you can usually get those at a AAA office, some travel agencies do them and other places advertize passport photos. You can take your application to the post office or mail it to the passport office. If you need the passport in a hurry, you can request expedited service and pay extra for the express mailings. The normal processing time is about six weeks, but you can request AND pay for expedited service and get your passport in about two weeks. My bet is the closer to the end of this year we get, the longer normal processing will take because more people will be applying because they are going out of the country. I suggest that you apply as soon as possible.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: The Government of Mexico requires that all U.S. citizens present proof of citizenship and photo identification for entry into Mexico. However, some U.S. citizens have encountered difficulty in boarding flights in Mexico without a passport. The U.S. Embassy recommends traveling with a valid U.S. passport to avoid delays or misunderstandings.

Minors: Mexican law requires that any non-Mexican under the age of 18 departing Mexico must carry notarized written permission from any parent or guardian not traveling with the child.
