I know they say these are private hotels, but I've stayed at the one in SF several times. I thought it was the best for the money, just a few blocks to the Embarcadero in one direction, Chinatwon in the other. You can find them on travelocity, etc.

There is no consistent answer. Hotels change their prices all the time based on demand and availability. I've gotten rooms at the Mark Hopkins, Fairmont, Sheraton Palace, Sir Francis Drake, Nikko, Argent, and Clift (all fantastic luxury hotels in good repair) for under $150. But if you're not lucky, a second rate run down hotel starts at $150.
This may sound unehlpful, but I would seriously try priceline first before trying directly. Also check travelzoo and the other discount websites.

Try www.jdvhospitality.com. They have many different kinds of hotels and price ranges. You can likely find one that is your style, they even have "Yvette the Hotel matchmaker" to help you narrow your choices. It's a pretty useful site. When booking these hotels I recommend calling them directly as they best know at the hotel what is avalible and what rates they can offer, outside agencies such as Expedia and even the Central Reservations number can end you up in a room unlike the one you anticipated.

San Francisco is extremely expensive--I have stayed at the Hilton several times but got a really good deal because I am in the hospitality industry--however check their web site, www.hilton.com--sometimes they have good deals. It's a decent hotel in Union Square which is close to restaurants, shopping, attractions, etc. It's a large convention-like hotel---I think it has like 1,000 rooms--but it's clean and they have good service.

your best bet is to stay away from hotels if you are staying more than 1 night.. have the convience of home in a 1 bedroom or more bedrooms if needed on this website www.vrbo.com
they start at 50 bucks a night.. #68967 is on 65.00 a night for a 1 bedroom guest house.. call the owners direct and find the best area for your trip and have a great time and save money...

Hotels are super expensive, overrated, and in poor condition in SF. If you're up to it, I'd highly suggest the hostels. Easy to meet other travelers and locals than staying in a hotel.

To get the perfect deals, you should shuttle in the time of non-height circumstances consisting of now by potential of mid-November or round February - April. you also pick to purchase your tickets a minimum of 21 days in improve and be versatile including your shuttle dates. now and again shuttle agencies have good deals. they could purchase lower priced tickets and then promote them to human beings. in spite of the indisputable fact that because a number of those tickets are so discounted, you received't earn mileage from the airline you fly with.
