Radar-Radio Detection and Ranging. Generally, RADAR is a system that uses radio waves to detect, determine the distance or speed of objects such as aircraft, ships, rain and map them. Speed detection is measured by the amount of Doppler Effect frequency shift of the reflected signal.
SONAR (SOund Navigation And Ranging) — or sonar — is a technique that uses sound propagation under water to navigate or to detect other vessels. There are two kinds of sonar — active and passive. Sonar is a subcategory of acoustic location.

RADAR means Radio Detection and Ranging. It is used in many applications but is mainly used for military operations. Radio Waves are beamed from a transmitter and if some object is in the way, the reflect and return to the transmitter, thus showing the operator that something is coming towards them.
SONAR means Sound Navigation and Ranging.

Radar work on the principle of light waves (like ultravoilet light use to track the distance of the object from the source).. sonar on the principle of sound waves(like ultrasonic waves used to track to distance of say submarine from the source ). both work on the same principle just a medium is different...
