Meat is not murder because "murder" is defined as killing a human. Meat is only murder if you are a cannibal.

Meat is not essential for the human diet but very nearly so - we have to eat a lot of high protein foods like beans and pulses and other "meat substitute" foods to make up for a lack of meat and the fats and vitamins we get from meat.

Basically we are designed to have a proportion of meat in our diet - that is why we have canine teeth and digestive enzymes designed to deal with meat. However, it is also true that most Westerners eat too much meat - both in terms of the size of the portions and the frequency that we eat them.

The main problem with the "Meat is Murder" brigade is over-sentimentality. Most of the animals we eat would not be alive in the first place if we were not raising them for food. And if they were alive they would not be as well fed and looked after and would usually die much more horrifically by being chased and eaten by some large predator than by being quickly and humanely despatched in a modern abbatoir.

Much of this sentimentality is due to the modern supermarket pre-packed method of retailing meat - people don't see the transition between live animal and meat on a plate so they get all sentimental about killing the lovely cow in the field or the lovely bunny rabbit. When I was a boy the local butcher's shop sold whole rabbits, with the skin still on and the butcher would remove the skin for the customer if asked - and would do it directly in front of the customer. No-one said "awwww... poor bunny rabbit" - it was food and no-one suddenly dashed off to become a vegetarian.

So I suggest the Raffia Mafia go get a life or go knit themselves a pair of sandals instead of trying to impose their lentil-munching flatulence on the rest of us!

We were designed to kill each other, but most of us have overcome this natural instinct.

It's hard to do the same with meat, but in the future, we will have the option of cultured meat that doesn't involve killing an animal and I think we will look upon the old ways of getting meat as uncivilized and barbaric. I'm a bit of a hypocrite for saying this because I still eat meat...

I really liked the album, it was the 2nd by the group the Smiths. It included the song How Soon Is Now which is used as the theme for charmed.

But if you are talking about eating meat??? What the Hell are you doing asking this question in the entertainment section, it should be under philosophy or something like that.

"save a cow - eat a vegetarian"

"definition of vegetarian - bad hunter"

I suppose you could say it was murder but really I would have thought murder was just about people. We are omnivorous so we are supposed to kill and eat meat as well as veg. Animals are there for us to eat. Carnivorous animals catch and slaughter other animals for food. What's the point in being top of the food chain if you don't take advantage of it?

If people stopped eating meat altogether then one of 2 things would happen.

1. Farmers stop breeding animals as there is no point, therefore a lot more animals are killed than by breeeding them for food, they are also killed unnecessarily. Then also, thousands, possibly millions of people all over the world will be out of jobs and incomes, creating more poverty.

OR

2. People will stop eating animals and the animals will become wild as no one will want them. The animals will become overpopulated and eat all of the vegetation meaning people would have no food at all. Also, in this situation people would lose jobs and incomes anyway.

So really, for all of those people saying meat is murder and what about those poor little animals, by not eating meat, you are indirectly contributing to the downfall of the human race.

Animals ARE there for our consumption otherwise we wouldn't be able to eat them.

Meat is not murder. Or plucking a potato is murder. When an animal or a bird is beheaded it becomes brain dead and the suffering is for a fraction of a second. If the throat is slit also the animals become brain dead .If the blood vessel of neck is severed blood (under pressure)spills out and no pain is felt.Wrigling is a reflex movement in a painless animal.Puritans need tution in physiology.

You ALL do realize that when we pass, we are going to have to answer to "ourselves" about all the wrong we have done in our lives. Every living thing has a soul. Animals were NOT put here for our consumption.

I know this is hard to understand because you are living in the here and now and this is the only way of life we know, but you need to be aware that it is all wrong.

There is so much we are ignorant too and that it is really sad. It's hard for me to explain how hard it is to argue this ignorant issue with people who's mind's are completely closed to anything outside their little box they call life.

Most people can't selfishly give up food they love even though they know the reality of what it is and where it came from and what it once was. This is the perfect example of how IGNORANT humans really are.

Please don't eat meat.

Well, I don't agree that people should hunt for entertainment......ah, sorry, on the wrong track aren't I? Errrrm, yes, no, meat isn't murder, people eat meat because that's what it's there for, I think in the bible it does actually say we can eat meat, so where's the problem?

(thought I'd give you a bit of a religious answer, feeling odd today)
