I have a very good friend who is in a band and plays bass guitar. His birthday is coming up and I want to give him something special. What are the best strings he could use? or Do bass guitarists use picks? If you were a bass guitarist what would you consider a special, thoughtful gift that you could use with your craft? He LOVES music and is a talented musician....and he has everything, seriously! I want this gift to be special and thoughtful and mean something. I need suggestions PLEASE! Thanks for the help.

Strings: D'Addario half rounds. If he hasn't played them, he is in for a treat.
Picks: If he doesn't normally use them (he may want to experiment), get an assortment (soft, medium, heavy) and include a few felt picks (pick action w/pluck sound).
To make it special: Do some creating. Decorate a little box to resemble an amplifier, and place the items inside.

Hello, MaHaa-- I had hoped to provide some songs for your husband's birthday, but the case was closed before my list was finished (my apologies)! Anyway, I didn't want all that work to go to waste. What you did for your hubby is awesome. Here are my personal favorites:

Uncle Sam - When I See You Smile (cover)
Faith Hill & Tim McGraw - Let's Make Love
Amy Grant - Love Me Tender (cover)
Shawn Stockman - Visions of a Sunset
Jim Brickman and Martina McBride - My Valentine
Over the Rhine - My Love is a Fever
Larry Carlton - Michele's Whistle (instrumental)
Susan Ashton - Spinning Like a Wheel
Phil Collins - Groovy Kind of Love
Vigilantes of Love (VOL) - Love Cocoon
The Way You Make Me Feel (instrumental, jazz combo "Swinging to Michael Jackson")
Ewan McGregor & Nichole Kidman - Come What May
Giant - Love Welcome Home
Amy Grant - That's What Love is For (single mix)
Amy Grant - My Buddy (cover)
Amy Grant - Say Once More
Charlie Peacock - No Place Closer to Heaven
Over the Rhine - Lifelong Fling
David Wilcox - Deeper Still

These songs are less seductive in nature, but are still great for mood music:

Over the Rhine - Fool
Over the Rhine - I Want You to be My Love
Billy Joel - Shameless
Seal - Deep Water
Seal - Violet
Seal - Kiss from a Rose
Amanda Marshall - Dark Horse
Amanda Marshall - If I Didn't Have You
Amy Grant - How Can We See That Far
Amy Grant - Saved By Love
Carolyn Arends - Home Fires Burning
Out of the Grey - Love Like Breathing
Out of the Grey - So We Never Got to Paris
Over the Rhine - My Funny Valentine
Phil Keaggy - Tennessese Morning (instrumental)
Sara Evans - I Could Not Ask for More
Sara Evans - Tell Me
Edie Brickell - Good Times
Edie Brickell - Times Like This
Lost Dogs - Honeysuckle Breeze
The Choir - So Far Away
The Choir - Like a Cloud
Nickel Creek - Why Should the Fire Die?
Nickel Creek - Lighthouse's Tale
Cindy Morgan - How Could I Ask for More
Michael Roe - Honey Run
Vigilantes of Love (VOL) - Solar System

And, though slow songs are generally regarded as the best for the kind of mood you're talking about, here are some of my favorite upbeat love songs:

Paul Overstreet - Let's Go to Bed Early (and Stay Up Late)
The Prayer Chain - Bendy Line
Charlie Peacock - Kiss Me Like a Woman
Frankie Valli - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Daniel Amos - Can't Take My Eyes Off You
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever
Dolly Parton - Sugar Hill
Amy Grant - I Love You
Amy Grant - Stay for a While
Shania Twain - A Party of Two
Bad English - When I See You Smile
Georgia Satellites - Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Susan Ashton - No Remedy for Love
Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel
Sarah Masen - Kissing Tree
Sarah Masen - Love (Victoria Williams cover)
Aerosmith - I Don't Want to Miss a Thing
Cindy Morgan - Stars
Lost Dogs - No Ship Coming In
Lost Dogs - All That Remains
Undercover - Whoa Nelly
The Choir - Gripped
Everything But The Girl - Missing
Sara Evans - Coalmine

hmmm, i know id want Elixer strings or a really nice strap... you could decorate it yourself.... or perhaps books with tabs from one of his favorite players... i have the best of victor wooten and a scale book that has every single scale... it says that it equals 5 years worth of lessons.... those always come in handy, no matter how good you are...
