Here is why it is NOT 160 acres. 160 acres is a quarter of a section, but since a section is one mile square, when you divide that up into 4 equal quarters, each quarter is a half-mile square.
If you divide that 160 acres (half-mile square) into 4 equal parts, each one is 1/4 mile square and is 40 acres.

I get 40 acres. .25 miles is 5,280 feet /4. And an acre is 43,560 feet squared according to dictionary.com. Thus, (5,280 / 4 = 1320) 1320 *1320 / 43,560 is 40.
