Those Mr. Clean - White Sponges (for walls) work
great on sneakers. Make sure you use a brand new
sponge as it tends to leave pieces of the sponge on
the shoe when you use an older sponge.

Use Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser. This works great on leather sneakers or the rubber trim on canvas sneakers.

If it's white, use bleach and wear an apron or an old shirt you don't like. Bleach will splash you. Get a bowl (like a cereal bowl) and pour out a little bit of bleach. DON'T LET IT SPLASH ON YOU! Use a white face towel and dip in it the bleach, (part of it, like the tip of one of the ends) and wipe firmly, but with a soft touch. Set out in the sun whenever you are done and you have new shoes.

I agree with the washer method-have done it lots of times. One trick I learned is to put the detergent for that load into the shoes themselves. Helps to deodorize them.
