Believe it or not, yes, they are. It's comparible to the same phenomenon as (most) humans are afraid of spiders. They are so much smaller than we are...but afraid of being bitten by one. Elephants aren't wise enough to understand that the little mouse is truly incapable of biting the hell out of it.

Elephants have very poor eye sight and probably cannot even see most mice.

No. It is just a silly myth of cartoons for a cheap laugh. Elephants really don't notice such small things (poor eyesight, you know).
PS: Bboyod, I don't know where you get your info, but you may want to look up elephants in a real encyclopedia. Their brains are far larger than a peanut and they are as intelligent as dolphins.
