Are you showing your age, or is this something that survived the 50's, 60's, etc. We played this game in elementary school, too. That was during and following WWII.
I live across from a public park, and the ball diamond is 100 yards out my front window. The various teams are out there every day during the summer months, along with their coaches and a gaggle of adoring moms and dads. Not once, in the 26 years I have lived there, have I seen a group of kids, just kids, go out there and organize their own baseball, or softball game.
As a kid, I can remember unorganized sport being a regular activity, in my neighborhood. We would choose up sides, always picking the ringers first. We would debate, argue, and make up rules to decide deadlocks. We developed the ability to negotiate, resolve problems, and socialize. None of us had a weight problem, because we ate at mealtime. There was no such thing as noshing between meals, unless we had a .05 for a candy bar. Even that was a special treat, that is, to have a candy bar all to your self.
These were simple times. The challenges of life were not nearly so important. We didn't need to be the best or the smartest or the most handsome. We improved by watching our peers, particularly the ones who were more proficient at whatever. We were the pre-war generation with no name.

I use to play Red Rover alot when I was in elementary school. I loved it. I am a teacher now and a few years ago, my school outlawed the playing of Red Rover. This was due to a first grader getting his arm broke when another child tried to break through them. SCARY!!! I still love that game but it can be dangerous. Our school has also outlawed dodgeball, too. What's next tag????

That was my favorite game way back then. And freeze tag! I remember all the girls would try and hold the hand of the cutest boy in class. What about duck duck goose? All the mean boys hit the girls hard on the head. LOL seems like the cutest and meanest boys were one and the same.

I remember it well; I'm surprised that my arms remained in their sockets.
And you're right on about the overweight kids part. I find it astounding that so many schools don't have recess anymore. No recess in elementary school and no driver's ed in high school. It's crazy. And both mainly because of high insurance costs.

Yup -- great game.
I find that it is not that kids are not let outside -- but they cannot play games where someone may get offended (my kids are stil young -- this may change when they are older). It can't be a winning and losing game...
