All of us have our own idols or people whom we emulate. Sometimes, they can be our own family members or mere strangers. But, one thing that remains is that the individual's strength of character and spirit will always be an inspiration and beacon of hope.

My idol is not a well-known or famous person, except maybe in the city where he practiced medicine for about 30 years... He is a now retired neurosurgeon, and 30-some years ago, he was the only one who did what had to be done in order to save the life of a very sick baby--me. When all of the other supposedly expert doctors from the big city wouldn't touch me with that proverbial ten-foot pole, he was the only one with enough moxie (aka nerve) to attempt the procedure that would alleviate the damaging effects of hydrocephalus. It is only thanks to him--and my own stubborn tenacity--that I am alive and well and bright enough to sit here and write this answer. If having the nerve to do whatever is necessary to save your patients isn't strength of character, I don't know what is.

Frank Lloyd Wright. He proved that age was no barrier to creativity. I my opinion most of his best building were design in the later years of his life. Also, he's a architect whose talents went beyond mere buildings and into the very fabric of life within those building - designing the furniture, ironmongery et al. Take a look at the link, then I think you'll understand.

Today's world ignores the talent and opinion of anyone over 40 - I'm not over 40 so it's not sour grapes. Youth is not always where the creativity comes from. Experience of life is a great teacher.

Well, I guess I would have to say Jesus... and for the record, I am not Christian at all. Think of the qualities you think of when you think of a great person to idolize and he will fit them all. I am not talking about the myths surrounding him, walking on water etc... but the basic stuff, the message he was giving, his strength of character, ability to move people, his compassion, and his abhorrence of violence. I had a friend once who said, "Jesus may not have been the son of God, but he was definitely the coolest guy ever!" I happen to agree :)

Audrey Hepburn is my idol. She overcame so much in her life and became an icon in the 50s and 60s. Audrey lived in Nazi occupied territory for much of her childhood. She escaped concentration camp lineup by hiding in a cellar for 3 weeks with only a few apples to eat. She moved to England and became a struggling actress, but when she hit it big, she became one of the most well-known actresses in hollywood history. She was an icon for style in the 1960s, and has always been known for her class and grace. Later in her life she worked with starved people in Africa, because she knew what they felt. When I have trouble making a decision I ask myself "What would Audrey do?"

Scarlett O'Hara --

She did what she had to do to survive. She found a way to use what she had, and it saved her and her family.

Plus, she is an interesting character whether you agree or not.
