T^hose who think Africa is a country, not a continent, have lost grasp of their geography lessons--or forgotten them. Africa is a huge continent, with many nations and cultures.
it is that very mix , plus the exotic flora and fauna, that draws people to visit that continent. There is a lot to see and appreciate!

I think the reason people may think that has to do with a) poor geography teachers and b) the fact that South Africa is a country.

On the matter of South Africa being a country, which everyone has heard of a few times over thanks to Nelson Mandela and Charlize Theron; the logical deduction people may have is "Well if there's a South Africa, there must be an Africa" as a country- makes sense even though it's distinctly wrong.

Now the appeal of africa as a country that I can explain. It's where i want to go for my belated honeymoon. The wilderness of Africa is stunning- why go to the zoo when you can be IN the safari and see the animals as they were intended; and a landscape unlike anything you could ever come across. I want more from a travel destination than a place to go shopping - I want an experience different from where I live- that's what Africa has to offer that so many other places just can't.

People do not value learning as much as they used to and think there are two types of people visiting Africa. Some people go for the great safari trips and nature then others go because there is a lot of need in Africa with the HIV and AID viruses spreading. Many people like to get involved and help out.

Africa is a continent. And many tourists may like to visit Africa to see its culture up close. Some people of African-American descent, like to go to Africa to "connect" to their roots.

Africa is a huge continent with so many things to see and many wonders of the world. The pyramids, the Nile, safaris, animals that we can't see in North America or other continents. It has a fascinating history and culture and people are by their very nature, eager to learn and explore this world we live in and expand their horizons and their awareness beyond the things they know and see everyday.

Because too many people in this country don't pay any attention to Geography or to History, and don't look any further than their own front yard or to the sitcoms on TV for amusement.
Americans have become too complacent ,so they fail to realize that this land is already in a decline.
Where is the Roman Empire, the Greek Empire, the Byzantines, the Egyptian Empire? Where are the monarchies of Europe? All gone down in the mire of their own self-destructive self aggrandizement. Alas, history has a nasty habit of repetition.

The attraction to Africa is for them to find out if the stories of naked people living in trees and eating raw meat are true.

Your premise is flawed.
I do not believe many think that Africa is a country rather than
a continent and I don't believe there is much tourism to Africa.
Of course there is always the occasional idiot that not only
believes that Africa is a country but also wants to go there.

Have you seen how many people can identify Mississippi and New York State on a map, let alone places outsid of the States? The average American knows very little about geography.
And the reason varies from person to person, place to place. There are so many interesting places I'd love to visit there. Also, the different animals and nature. Some people also go for humanitarian reasons.

Because they aren't that good at geography.

And there is a lot in Africa that you don't get elsewhere: Safari tours are a great attraction. Mombasa has a lot of beach hotels which are at least as good as anything in the caribbean, but they remain largely overlooked by British tourists.
