Good Question... i had the same question !
I think people think since there is no fixed salary/money to be earned if you are self-employed, sky is the limit, and thats what you earn :).
There are far less self-employed people than employed, this also means they need to keep defending themselves (minority vs majority) as to why they are self employed. So, many self employed people do give the false impression that they are doing well.. while most are not !

misconception that anyone who "has their own business" is rich because they get all the money. Those people have never tried to run a business and never thought about the expenses etc.
very common misconception of folks who have never had much responsibility.

Maybe they figure you must be loaded, or would have to be making great $$ to put up with all the BS it takes to run your own business.

Because people just assume you must have money if you are able to work for yourself, even though you are probably in debt up to your eyeballs trying to get your buisness of the ground...

i guess they think of the ingenuity needed to do somthing like that. they figure you have that you have cash. i know that's not true. however, if that is not your case, may i say i hope it is someday soon.

Because they just don't know what it's like. They also think that you don't have a boss. They don't realize that every customer you have is your boss :)
