Hi GeeCee
When you say beach in England you need to differentiate between pebble and sand.

If you need access to the water to swim, Brighton is not suitable. It is composed of large gravel. I would suggest Southend in Essex or any of the adjacent beaches. Southend is accessed by car via the A13 from London's Commercial Road or Fenchurch Street station alongside The Tower for train.

On a good day you might get to Southend in an hour by car or train. During the last few stations by train you will pass various beaches with sand! You can hop on an off English trains provided you continue in one direction, so you can sample all the Essex beaches on one trip!

2hour-from-London really has to be "Bournemouth". But get off at BOSCOMBE station if you are training. You get a ten minute walk to a lovely sandy beach. Bournemouth is just about reachable from Central London by car in 2hours and same by train but more guaranteed

It's all relative really isn't it?

Brighton is easy to get to, 1hr from London Victoria, and has other attractions when not at the beach (e.g. the Pavillion and the Lanes).

Since most English beaches are pebble, I think you choose by things like: ease of access, amenities close to the beach. (the sea is cold and grey along most of the coast adjacent ot London!)

My own favourite is Whitstable but I'm biased, I grew up there as a boy. Nice little town and full of boutiquey shops (mores the pity) these days.

Has a peaceful feel to it if you don't like the bustle of Brighton. About 55m from Victoria Station:

it depends what you want from a beach, my personal favourite is studland bay. it is located on the entrance to poole harbour across the sandbanks ferry. its a national heritage site and its where the army trained for the d day landings. the golden sand stretches for about three miles and behind it there are heather sandbanks as far as you can see (full of wildlife and nice walks). I have been all over the world and this one of the best beaches ive seen if not the best.
check out the national heritage website.

Shoeburyness-on-sea in Essex is good - it has a very large grass area - and a nice sand beach if you prefer! Get the C2C train from Tower Bridge or Limehouse station and be there in 45 mins

Best beach has to be Minnis Bay at Birchington. Down M2 onto the A299 Thanet Way towards Margate. Turn left at Birchington roundabout down to Minnis Bay. Second thoughts - don't come. I like to keep it all to myself!!!
