I have a "Spin-dribble-Spin-dribble-dribble-dribble" free throw routine. I've never been called for dribbling the ball over the line, or spinning it.

By Spinning the ball youre just allowing your hands to get a good grip and a better feel for the ball at that particular time. I dont think any ref will call you for that during a FT.

I haven't reffed in a few years, but I was a certified high school referee for six years after (and while) playing year-round for about 12 years.

Let me get this straight. You shoot the ball with tons of backspin so that it doesn't hit the rim but it comes back to you at the foul line. Do you mean that you just kinda spin it forward like a dribble before you shoot, or do you actually shoot it with some distance and make it spin back to you? If you're just spinning it right in front of you and it can't be mistaken for a shot, then it's legal. If you're actually shooting it then it has to hit the rim in order to go into play and, by most level rules, it has to hit the rim before players can go after the rebound. If you shoot the ball and it does not hit the rim, then the play is dead and it's the other team's ball. This is to prevent players from launching it off the backboard and retrieving the rebound for themselves with ease.

I hope that answers your question. Feel free to e-mail if you don't get the answer you're looking for from anybody here.

I am 18 and am not certified but have ref an 18 year old league and would love to anwer this one due to my two years experience.
1. During a free throw the ball must hit the rim failure of the ball hitting the rim equals an alternating possestion rule.
2.From what it seems you either need to try to hit the rim if it bounces and hits the rim your good if not .

There's nothing wrong about the ball bouncing over the line, so yeah it's counted.

Nah, unless your ref is a complete Nazi, it shouldn't count.

Players bounce the ball over the free-throw line all the time.
