I have a 2000 BMW 323i and I feel a shaking in the stering wheel and in the seat around 40 mph and over this sometimes happens at slower speeds too. It gets worse when i apply the breaks .

The following has been done to it in the past 3 weeks....
1. brand new tires put on
2. 2 of the rims have been switched out (due to 2 of them being bent)
3. the bushings have been replaced
4. front end alignment (the tech did not say that he seen anything that needed replaced)

Im not sure if the belt in the tire is broken or if its something more serious... what do you think?

Apparently it has something to do with imbalance in the tires. It's extremely dangerous to drive around when ur car shakes like that, coz the wheel could just fall off, and that could be a tragic scene on a highway with all them big trucks. Y don't u ask a mechanic abt that?
Drive as slow as possible, so u can have control over ur car incase anything happens. Good Luck!

The most basic thing to do would be to have the wheels balanced. But I assume this would've been done when you mounted the new tires.

Warped brake rotors would normally make your car shudder ONLY when you apply the breaks, and would shudder at any speed, not just at 40mph.

Your tie rods could be worn and these need to be replaced in pairs. Your control arm ball joint might be worn and if this is the case you need to replace the whole control arm (BMW has non-replaceable ball joints for your model).

To test ball joint or tie rod, have the car raised up and rock (shake) the tire top/bottom and left/right. top/bottom play usually means ball joint. Left/right play usually means tie rods.

Warped rotors. Replace them and the tie rod ends too as they're probably ruined by this. If you have a broken or separated belt in your tires, you'll see an unusual bulge or crease on the sidewalls. Also you want to have the tires "spin balanced" instead of "level balanced".

Am not really sure since u mentioned all of what I thought might have been the problem. You shouldnt take this lightly cause i was with my friend in his car and he had the same problem and just ignored it. We got on the highway and seemed to shake so we decided to get off the highway slowing down and as we were exiting his front left tire just flew off and the car skidded of the road on to a ditch luckily no one one was hurt.

you shouldnt drive it until the problem is solved.

U could need an oil change, or fluids added like transmission or radiator, power steering may be an issue. the best place to take for sure answers would be a bmw dealer, or foreign car specialist usually listed in the phone book

deff balance, alignment doesnt do anything for the car shaking. its the balance and if thats not it, then one of the rims could be cracked
