Oh, why does Pudge's name always come up in these? Stop the name recognition folks (which, by the way, is the main reason he got into the all-star game) - he is still a good player, but nowhere near the best player on the best team in baseball.
Let's divide "player" into two camps - hitters and pitchers - it's tough to compare them side-by-side.
Best hitter/everyday player is Curtis Granderson - a 5 tool guy who is only going to get better. Yes, I know, the average is a little on the low side for a leadoff guy, but he is a threat everytime he gets on base because of his speed, has pretty good power for a leadoff batter, and patrols one of the largest centerfields in the majors. (Close second goes to Maggs, who has been fantastic in this comeback season, and close third is Carlos Guillen, who is quietly one of the best shortstops in MLB, but again, doesn't have the "name power" of a Jeter or Tejada)...
Best pitcher - big V. Nasty stuff (and not just hard stuff, which everyone is way too obsessed with), deceptive, quick feet, great pickoff move, and again, only going to get better. Hopefully the stretch run of the season does not wear him down - he can eat innings, but that doesn't mean they should keep feeding him :) (Close second to the Roaster Kenny Rogers, who looked decent last night in the all-star start.)

The Tigers entire offense is balanced. Yes Mags is finally producing some numbers from his earlier years with the Sox when he wasn't injured, but I think if you take him of the team they are still a playoff team.
With that being said I am a big believer in pitching being the key to winning (I'm a Reds fan, I know why we are not in first...pitching). Is there a better starting 4 rotation in baseball right now? Rogers, Robertson, Bonderman, and Verlander. Since this question is asked of one player I will take Verlander. A few reasons: 1) Rogers, Bond, and Robertson have been pitchers in the bigs for several years, you know what you are going to get from them (Bond and Robertson are having above average years).
2) Anytime you plug a rookie into your staff most managers are happy for a solid 4-5 starter his first year, posting a 4.50-5 ERA. Verlander right now has a 3.01 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 10 W.
There are a ton of hitters in the MLB, but pitchers are a very hard thing to come by. Verlander by far is the Tigers best player; they would not be in first without him.

Right now is hard to tell, because the whole team is doing great,
Of course Ivan Rodriguez and Maglio Ordonez, are two of the spark plugs for your team. I assume you are a tiger fan. Good and enjoy
the ride after all these years of finishing last.

It is Rodriguez. He doesn't hit as well as he used to, and Ordonez is a great hitter, but it is very difficult to get any production from a catcher. Offense at that position is much more valuable than offense from a RF or LF.
Add to that the fact that he is a pretty good defensive player(off his prime there, as well), and Rodriguez is great.

Pitcher- Has to go to Rogers Or Bonderman, when Bonderman pitches his ERA. is very low, aswell with his WHIP (Walks, Hits, Per Inning Pitched).
Player- Ordonez or Marcus Thames. Marcus comes through in the clutch.

It's a team effort.
Everyone is stepping up when needed.
There are no "superstars" No league leaders, no huge seasons, just average players playing with a team spirit.
The Tigers are on a Mission this year.

its pudge and his number might not be what they were offensively but he makes up for it with his defense and his ability to handle young pitchers and call the game. and he is a big reason why they are so good at pitching esp since the pitcher dont have to worry bout holding on the runner. and he is still an offensive threat. and has better numbers then granderson. the only person wit better number is magglio but he doesnt offer anything defensively.
