Looking through Paul's list, a glaring omission (by the FA), immediately springs to mind. How in the World did The FA, never offer the job to Brian Clough, still baffles me The man won 2 titles with 2 small clubs, the European Cup twice, 3 straight Wembley Finals and a simple but still the most effective way of playing, by passing the ball. All these occurred through the 70s and much of the 80s, when England, despite having the best clubs in Europe, were poor cousins in the international arena. 30 years later, and still the FA can never seem to get the correct manager for the national team. Only the reigns of Bobby Robson and Venables, brought some sense of respectability. If Greece, Denmark and Holland, (Ignoring regular giants, Italy, France and Germany), could produce triumphant teams, one must ask; why England couldn't?

Sir Bobby Robson. The only manager since Sir Alf to get England to a World Cup semi final, in 1990. Also helped by the fact that he posessed probably the most promising England team since 1970 (Gascoigne, Linekar, Pearce, Waddle etc)

On results, Sven has a 72% winning record in competetive games, but I think Terry Venables. His Euro 96 team was the nearest England have had to a trophy winning team since we won the World Cup.

After thinking about this question. I'm actually quite depressed now. But I'd go with Sir Bobby.
