All depends on what you prefer.
There are very good museums including the place where Anne Frank lived.
The red light district is a must for walking around as there are lots of things to see (and lots of people doing the same thing)
The trams are efficient. The canals are very attractive and if you get a guide book you can try various walks along canals and get a bit of history e.g. why all the buildings are tall and narrow.
I've been 5 times and enjoyed myself immensely.

I was fortunate enough to stay in a rental apartment overlooking De Waag, near the Oude Kerk (Old Church). The red light district must be seen to be believed. It's surreal, especially when you have hash swirling inside your blood and brain.
The people I met were very very kind-hearted and mellow. And they were multi-lingual which helped us knuckle-headed Americans who only spoke English. I loved the international cross-roads feel of it. New York City (once New Amsterdam!) has this feel, but not nearly as much as Old, Original Amsterdam.
You can get food of almost ANY nationality there. It was great!
We were there for nine days and only scratched the surface. I recommend just strolling around the red light district and following your whims. It's a fun place. Go and be cool, and enjoy!
Safe travels, my friend!

I loved Amsterdam - ideal place for a weekend as it's compact and you can get about quickly by tram. The Van Goch museum was great and you should take a boat on the river. All the little bars and cafes were good. It's worth walking through the red light district just after dark - your eyes will pop out! If you're going in the winter, it's FREEZIN'.

Since I can not email you, I am responding on this question about a response you gave to someone else pertaining to cops who are a waste of taxpayers money when they stand around and "do nothing" at football games.
You're a very intelligent person aren't you. You've already figured out the dangers of what can happen at sporting events when people get excited about bad calls made by the officials in a game. You already know that gang members never go to football games to start fights. You already know that cars don't get vandalized at football games. Hmmm? Yeah, you're extremely safe without law enforcement. You need to write your local politicians and tell them you want to save money for the taxpayers and completely stop having any security at the games.
That should go over really well. The first question they should ask you is if you are on medication. Let me guess, you've been arrested sometime in the past and all law enforcement are just pigs and you think they suck, right??? Hmmm.....just don't bother calling the P.D. the next time you or a family member is being assaulted, or when you hear someone coming in through your door at 4:00 am. Just leave L.E. out of it since we take up so much uneeded taxes from you.

Amsterdam is one of my favourite cities, it is really small so you can walk or tram anywhere easily. Van Gogh Museum and Reijks Museum are great, red light district is interesting(plus sex museums), the little China Town has great food, the Indonesian food is ace too. Just wander around with a city map and you'll have an excellent time. I don't know if it's still there, but cocktails at The Bulldog Bar was one of my favourite things to do.

Amsterdam is wicked, you must visit the grasshopper! Also the sex shows are a must as is the sex museum! You might get a bit pee'd off with people asking you "do you want to buy some charlie"! ( or not!if you do want some!) Another bar to visit just for the experience is "Teasers" absolutely wicked! ENJOY!!!
